Sofas and chairs can soon become faded and worn if they aren't cleaned regularly, with prolonged exposure to certain pollutants degrading upholstery over time. While many people put off the chore for months at a time, cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie shared some simple steps which she says should be incorporated into your "weekly" routine.

Lynsey, who shot to fame thanks to her appearances on ITV's This Morning as TV's Queen of Clean, frequently shares her handy cleaning tips with an audience of 287k on Instagram alone.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, she explained that residents should be vacuuming their sofa, chairs and other large upholstered furnishings at least once a week.

She said: "Make sure you give it a weekly vacuum and then a few times a month either use a steam cleaner to remove dirt and grim and banish any odours or if you have a carpet cleaning machine go over with the cleaner."

For stubborn stains, there are also some homemade solutions you can try.

Lynsey explained: "If you don’t have either of these cleaning gadgets you can soak a large microfibre cloth in a solution of warm water with a drop of laundry liquid detergent, cover a saucepan lid with the wet cloth and glide over the sofa or cushion."

Most households will likely already have laundry detergent tucked away for washing their clothes, but when combined with water the detergent can work outside of the washing machine too.

The laundry detergent and water can also be combined into a spray bottle and lightly spritzed onto the stain, however, it is important not to soak sofa cushions.

After spritzing your sofa, leave the solution for approximately 10 seconds before rubbing it with a damp cloth.

Lynsey added: "This will remove that surface layer of dirt and make it smell lovely and fresh."

Alternatively, Lynsey recommends using a mixture of dishwashing liquid and white vinegar.

White vinegar is often hailed for its multi-purpose uses around the home, with the acidic nature of the liquid working to combat build-ups of alkaline-based dirt and grime.

In the same way that dishwashing liquid works to remove grease and food from dishes, it can also help to remove oily stains from fabrics.

Simply combine the dish soap and vinegar in a spray bottle, dilute with water, and spritz onto the stains before wiping clean.

However, the Queen of Clean issued a word of caution when putting this hack into practice.

She explained: "Never work in a circular motion as this will cause water marks instead clean the whole area not just the stain working in strips going up and down and then leave to air dry.

"Do not lean [the furniture] against a radiator or use a hair dryer."

Lynsey is working with UK appliance experts at Swan, to produce three new products to eliminate bacteria, remove stubborn stains and offer an all-round floor-to-ceiling clean in the home.
