Procter & Gamble is recalling a variety of dry shampoo and conditioner products due to the presence of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer.

The voluntary recall involves aerosol dry shampoo and conditioner products from Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essence and Waterless products made in the U.S., as well as previously discontinued dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food. P&G said the recall comes after benzene was detected in some of the products.

Benzene is classified as a substance that can potentially cause cancer depending on the levels and amount of exposure.

“To date, The Procter & Gamble Company has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall and is conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution,” the company said in a statement. No other products are included in the recall.

The products in the recall were distributed nationwide both through retail stores and online. The products are being removed from shelves and P&G is offering reimbursements for consumers who purchased the shampoos and conditioners. People are advised to stop using the products and throw them away.
